Devotion Prepares the Soul for Sad Times
The book of Job more than any other in Scripture is a ‘Survival Manual for Sad Times’
The author, date, and place of the Book of Job are all uncertain. It may be that Job himself recorded his experiences in the book, or there may well have been another anonymous author. Scholars judge Job to be the oldest book of the Old Testament. It belongs to the period covered by the book of Genesis; and the time of Abraham. It’s believed by many to be the oldest book of the Bible
- Books of Poetry: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes because their made of either songs, poems or wise sayings
- Job is a Theological Book
- Opening our understanding to what is known as Theodicy which means ‘Justifying God’ vis a vis “How can a Good God Allow Good People to go through Bad things” ………… How can a God be Good and Allow Evil?
THREE PRIMARY LESSONS WE LEARN FROM STUDYING JOB
- We do not now or may not ever be given all the answers from God: Chps 1-2:10
- People who are suffering need comfort most from Christians: Chps 2:10-38:1
- Suffering should cause us to search for answers: Chps 38:1-42:1, KV 42:5
1Then Job answered the Lord and said, 2 “I know that You can do all things,
And that no plan is impossible for You.
3 ‘Who is this who conceals advice without knowledge?’
Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand,
Things too wonderful for me, which I do not know.
4 ‘Please listen, and I will speak;
I will ask You, and You instruct me.’
5 I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear;
But now my eye sees You;
6 Therefore I retract,
And I repent, sitting on dust and ashes.”Job 42:1-10, NASB
*In searching for answers God just be reveal that our suffering had little to do with His punishment and most to do with our practices

12 Theological Truths that God Wants Us to Know
Job 1:1-22, KJV
1 There was a man in the land of Uz (Shem’s Son), whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
Name Job in Hebrew means = He who returns {regardless what happens} [italics mine]
- God wants us to know that He never wants to lose us!
Phonetic Spelling: (tawm) A. Transliteration: Tam MEANING: Complete Integrity
Not perfect in the sense that he always scored 100%/ never made mistakes but that he
- He was always for what was right
- He wasn’t hypocritical saying one thing and doing another: A man of his word (i.e, church meeting example last week about democracy and Baptists)
- God wants us to know that hypocrisy destroys our worth as a witness
And Eschewed evil:
Phonetic Spelling: (soor) V. Transliteration: Sur MEANING: Turned away (Action Verb)
- Did his best to stay away from evil
- God wants us to know that we have power to turn away from a lot of sins
2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
- God wants us to know that Connecting with children can complete us in many ways
3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
- God wants us to know that we can achieve success without sin
4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses, everyone his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
- God wants us to know that intercessory prayer is impactful
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. (cr: Rev 20:10, 1:7, Isa 14:12, Ez 28:12, and 1 Pet 5:8)
*this before the Lord may have been on earth or in Heaven *this may have been also before the devil was completely removed from Heaven
7 And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
- God wants us to know that the devil is always looking for a lonely sheep
Matt 7:14 | Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. | Lonely due to having believed lies |
John 10:12 | He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. | Lonely due to unloving/uncaring leaders |
Acts 20:29 | I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; | Lonely due to life’s let-downs and low moments |
1 Peter 5:8 | Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, sneaking around to find someone to attack. | Lonely due to having been lured away |
8 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
* ”One conversation in eternity made this man famous in history” Dr. Tony Evans
9 Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
- God wants us to know that Everything we have He gave us!
11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
12 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord.
- God wants us to know that nothing happens without His permission!
Permission is not necessarily approval/Prodigal son
Isaiah 53:10
KJV | Douay-Rheims | CEV | GNT |
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. | And the Lord was pleased to bruise him in infirmity: if he shall lay down his life for sin, he shall see a long-lived seed, and the will of the Lord shall be prosperous in his hand. | The LORD decided his servant would suffer as a sacrifice to take away the sin and guilt of others. Now the servant will live to see his own descendants. He did everything the LORD had planned. | The LORD says, “It was my will that he should suffer; his death was a sacrifice to bring forgiveness. And so he will see his descendants; he will live a long life, and through him my purpose will succeed. |
- God wants us to know that when He allows pain it’s always for purpose!
13 And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
14 And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:
15 And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee
17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
- God wants us to know that all things belong to Him, most especially us!
19 And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
Phonetic Spelling: (shaw-khaw) V. Transliteration: Shachah MEANING: to bow down(Action Verb)
21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.
- God wants us to know that He’s still God whether we get what we think we should have or not
22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
- God wants us to know that the greatest turn one can ever make is the turn back towards Him!
